Of all the habits we share at DVY Herbal, this one surprises people most. It is not a workout. It is not a gym membership. It is a short walk, right after you eat.
What the research says
A 2022 meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine pooled seven studies comparing sitting, standing and light walking after meals. Light walking was linked with a more gradual rise and fall in blood sugar and more stable insulin levels than sitting or standing. Across a full day, light walking breaks lowered glucose by about 17% compared with prolonged sitting, while standing breaks lowered it by about 9.5%.
The reason is simple: working muscles use glucose for fuel. When you move after a meal, your legs start using some of the glucose that is entering your bloodstream.
How soon, and how long?
Blood sugar typically peaks within about 60 to 90 minutes after eating, so the best window is soon after the meal, ideally within the first 30 minutes.
You don't need much. In the studies above, people moved for just 2–5 minutes at a time. We suggest starting with 10 minutes after lunch and dinner, and building from there as it feels comfortable.
A step-by-step plan
- Week 1: a 10-minute easy walk after dinner.
- Week 2: add a 10-minute walk after lunch.
- Week 3: stretch one walk to 15–20 minutes.
- Week 4: most days, 20–30 minutes of walking in total, split across meals.
That adds up quickly toward the CDC's recommendation of 150 minutes of brisk activity a week.
No good place to walk? Try the step routine
A simple indoor alternative uses a single stair step:
- Stand facing the bottom step of a staircase, holding the rail.
- Step up with your right foot, then your left. Step down with your right, then your left.
- Repeat at a comfortable pace. Work up to about 25 minutes, then switch to leading with your left foot for up to 15 minutes.
Start with just a few minutes and build up over weeks. Keep a hand on the rail at all times.
Make it a routine
The walk sticks best when it is attached to something you already do. Our favorite version: eat → make a warm cup of tea → walk. Take the cup in a lidded mug, or sip it when you get back.
